Deva and Parrot Sahayam

 

The community they serve are People of Indian Origin whose ancestors were brought to Guyana by the British as Indentured Laborers from North and South India from 1838 to 1917 to work in the sugar estates throughout Guyana. They all speak only English.  Indo-Guyanese are the major community in Guyana.  Other communities are the Afro-Guyanese and the Amerindians. 

 

Facilitating weekly Children Clubs in various villages is one of their main efforts. This helps in the overall development of the children.  Special combined programs for Christmas and Easter are opportunities for their parents to enjoy their children performing and to hear the gospel clearly.

 

From time to time they organize Day Bible Camps for four or five days, where the children get to interact with the children of other clubs. Each child also gets personal attention and is able to share and sort out issues with a teacher or a counselor and get timely appropriate help. Some children who had attempted suicide recovered well and are moving on well with their lives. Guyana is called the Suicide Capital of the World.

 

Working with the Youth is another major part of their service.  Giving personal attention, teaching, training, and sharing personal experiences every week is helping them to bloom. The youth leaders are taken on mentoring trips to expose them to churches and youth of other denominations. They also get to interact with resource persons from other areas of Guyana which strengthens their faith.
 

Using Drama and Skits is found as an effective way of learning and applying the Bible truths. Practice time, rehearsals, and the drama performance in various locations build team spirit and provide clean fun and joy to the participants and the audience.

 

They spend time in counseling in person and by phone to those who approach them as well as they notice those who have needs. Some persons with specific needs are taken as special projects and are given time until they come out of their difficult situations.

 

A major part of their service is to study Bible with believing families and individuals every week in their homes and assisting them in their deeper Christian life.  This is found to be effective for strengthening the local churches.

 

They also encourage and support some pastors and their families by being their trusted friends, praying and fellowship.  They also have friends of all walks of life and faiths whom they want to sincerely love, encourage and influence.
